Our Open House

Our first Open House was successful with two members joining our club. Welcome Carmen Ruiz and Adrienne Fuller! We also had the privilege of welcoming four of our founding members of Apopka Foliage Toastmasters: Honorable Mayor John H. Land, Earl Nelson, Dr. Richard Poole, Bill Morris. Dr. Poole and Mr. Morris are still active in our club after 40 years!

We also had the privilege of offering feedback to an area student, Dominique Pinkney. Dominique is 10 years old and in the 5th grade. She won the speech contest at her school about what she would do if she were president and won! She is now preparing for regional competition.

Dominique was one speaker. Another speaker was Rudy St. Cyr, “Mr. In Your Face” who presented his prize winning speech, “So What?!” He will be presenting this speech at District Contest this weekend. Distinguished Toastmaster, Carol Francum presented an inspiring speech about what Toastmasters can do for you. Dominique won our Best Speaker award and we believe that she will do an excellent job in her competition!

Chris Hammett presented the Table Topics section of the meeting, along with her assistant Magician, Al Coury. Al flipped a coin. If the toss was heads, the speaker spoke about a personal or historical event during the year on the coin. If it was tails, they spoke about their life as an object (i.e. cell phone, mirror, door, etc.) Table Topics is an opportunity to speak for up to two minutes on a random topic. It’s always a lot of fun!

It was a wonderful meeting with refreshments and fellowship. We hope to have another Open House before the year is over. Apopka Foliage Toastmasters is an open community club, so if you missed our Open House, please feel free to visit any Monday night at 7 PM. Call Paul Seago, VP of Membership, at the Apopka Chamber of Commerce, 407.886.1441 for more information.
